Phu Quoc Taxi Fares: Airport to Hotel Without Overpaying

Phu Quoc taxi fares: airport to hotel without overpaying

Walk out of Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) and the curb pitch starts immediately: laminated rate cards, “Grab” lock screens, and quotes that can double a ten-minute ride. The island is nearly 50 km from Ganh Dau to An Thoi, so a bad first transfer wastes money and patience on day one.

This guide covers published per-kilometre rates for the main fleets, the extras apps rarely show up front, and three practical ways to get from the airport to your hotel. For broader island mobility (scooters, VinBus, day cars), see the transport overview.

Taxi price by fleet (indicative)

Public buses cover only parts of the north. Most visitors use apps, metered taxis or a pre-booked car.

| Fleet | Typical flag / start | Per km (guide) | Hotline | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Xanh SM (cyan VinFast) | 25,000 VND / first 2 km | 15,700 → 14,500 VND/km by distance band | 1900 2088 | | Grab (4- or 7-seater) | Dynamic | Often 10–15% under street cabs midday; surges in rain | App | | Mai Linh (green) | Metered | About 13,000–15,000 VND/km | 0297 3 97 97 97 | | Vinasun (white, green/red) | 11,000–12,000 VND / first 500 m | About 14,000–15,000 VND/km (first 30 km) | 0297 3 827 727 | | Nam Thang (local) | About 11,500 VND open | About 16,500–18,000 VND/km | 0297 3 757 575 |

Rates change; treat the table as a sanity check, not a contract. Confirm the meter is running or the app fare before bags go in the boot.

Four friction points that inflate the bill

1. Airport gate fee and night surcharge

An app may show 152,000 VND, then the driver adds a 10,000–15,000 VND airport entry/exit fee at the booth. Late domestic arrivals after 22:00 can also see a Xanh SM night fee (about 20,000 VND, 22:00–06:00). Ask before you sit down whether the quoted fare includes the gate fee.

2. App OTP and cash change

Grab and Xanh SM need SMS verification. Linking a foreign card often needs a bank OTP on your home SIM. If you switch to a local eSIM and drop home SMS, card payments may fail and you fall back to cash. Airport ATMs commonly dispense 500,000 VND notes that drivers claim they cannot change — keep smaller notes ready.

3. Fake “Grab” at arrivals

People holding phones with a Grab logo are not your assigned driver. They quote an “app price”, then invent luggage or “highway” fees once the trunk is closed. Only enter a car whose plate matches an active booking on your own phone.

4. Dead zones after dark

Getting to Rach Vem, Thom Beach or remote Ganh Dau resorts is easy by day. After about 17:30, app drivers avoid empty return kilometres. Agree a return pickup (Zalo number + fixed price) before the outbound driver leaves, or pre-book a transfer.

Three ways from PQC to the hotel

!Phu Quoc International Airport terminal

1. Pre-booked private transfer — Best with family, heavy bags or late landings. Fixed vehicle class and total, name sign at arrivals, gate fees usually included. Compare options on the transfers page.

2. Ride-hailing with a working payment method — Grab or Xanh SM suit solo travellers with light bags in daylight if the app already works with a card. Walk past the first touts to the official pickup pillar and share the pillar number. Xanh SM sometimes offers flat “Green Airport” packages (for example around 206,000 VND up to 18 km) — compare that tab with metered before confirming.

3. VinBus — useful, not free everywhere — As of early 2026, zoned tickets apply on airport-linked routes (about 20,000 VND single-zone, about 50,000 VND full-route on Routes 17/19). A group of four to Duong Dong can pay the same as one private cab, then still drag bags from the highway stop. Neither airport line replaces a southbound ride to An Thoi or Sunset Town.

Day trips: cab hops vs a car with driver

Stringing Sao Beach, Sunset Town and a pepper farm as separate one-way taxis from Duong Dong easily exceeds 900,000–1,100,000 VND with waiting and empty-return fees. A private 7-seater for a half day (about 500,000–650,000 VND / 4 hours) or full day (about 800,000–1,000,000 VND / 8 hours, up to ~100 km) usually costs less and keeps bags locked in the car. Pair that with the island itinerary logistics when choosing a base.

Quick rules at the curb

1. Carry 20,000 and 50,000 VND notes; avoid paying a 140,000 VND fare with a single 500,000 note. 2. Check the door decal phone number and sealed meter — paint colour alone is copyable. 3. Meter displays are in thousands: “165” means 165,000 VND. 4. Lock the return ride before heading north or east after midday.

Hotel area still undecided? Cross-check neighbourhood bases and the hotel catalog before you lock a long transfer.

FAQ

How much is a taxi from Phu Quoc airport to Duong Dong?

App quotes often land near 150,000–220,000 VND depending on traffic, vehicle size and surge; add about 10,000–15,000 VND for the airport gate fee unless your booking already includes it.

Is VinBus free from Phu Quoc airport in 2026?

Not on all airport-linked rides. Zoned tickets apply on Routes 17 and 19 (about 20,000 VND single-zone, about 50,000 VND full-route). Groups may pay as much as one private cab without door-to-door drop-off.

How do I avoid fake Grab drivers at PQC?

Only board a car whose licence plate matches an active booking on your own phone. Ignore curb agents who show a Grab logo wallpaper and quote an “app price” without your trip ID.
